The daily case figures have been above 3,000 for the past three days.
The five day moving average of Covid-19 cases has increased by 47 percent in the space of a week. But Leo Varadkar doesn’t think restrictions will have to be re-introduced:"Nobody can rule out the possibility of further restrictions. But I do think we can get through the winter without having to do so. The situation is fragile, but it is stable. We are seeing very high case numbers. We expect in part because of rising case numbers and also a backlog that has to be validated. We expect cases will hit 4000 in the next couple of days, if not more."
