Micheál Martin describes the variant as a "different threat" compared to other strains due to how quickly it spreads and says more data is needed to confirm if the spread is linked to increased hospitalisations.
Almost 1.9 million boosters have been administered since the roll out of the booster campaign- centres are closed in Cork and will be open again on the 27th.
Speaking to RedFM News, Taoiseach Micheál Martin says the take up of the booster in Ireland has been phenomenal:
"Well, I think people have been excellent. I think people really have adapted, they adapted during Delta and we did manage to get control of Delta. We did stabilise the numbers. The message is the same really in respect of Omicron- the combination really of adjusting behaviour along with the booster campaign and we can't ask any more of people in relation to the booster campaign, you know, 1.8 7 million now administered. That's very good going and we're going to keep flat out out on that."
