The Department of Education says students may have had to have their temperatures taken and wear masks to school if the leaving cert went ahead.
Last week it was announced that the traditional exams were to be replaced by predictive grades.
The Teachers Union of Ireland is now calling for a protocol to protect teachers from students trying to influence their grades.
