Transport workers are expressing serious concern about a potential return to "sardine like loadings" on buses, trains and trams in the coming weeks.

Yesterday saw capacity restrictions lifted on public transport for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Workers Unions says the move has generated "real concern" among its frontline members.

General Secretary of the NBRU, Dermot O'Leary, says workers feel like they're being treated like guinea pigs by government.

"Next week we reckon that with the schools opening that there will be demand on buses and trains and trams.

"And at peak times we have concerns that people will turn up expecting to get on buses and train like they did previously.

"WE feel very clear in our communications that we will never return to the sardine like loadings that were there pre Covid-19."
