Ireland has signed up to participate in the World Health Organisations programme
2.4 million euro in funding has been announced to support hospitals to recruit patients for the trial.
The programme aims to identify treatments that will reduce the severity of the infection.
Lead investigator for the trial in Ireland is UCC Professor Joe Eustace - he says so far 35 countries around the world are taking part:
