Up to 40 workers have reportedly been laid off at SouthDoc officers across Cork.

Solidarity TD Mick Barry says workers at SouthDoc Centres in Blackpool, Mallow, Macroom, Kanturk, Clonakilty and Skibbereen received the temporary layoff notices yesterday.

The service had previously announced plans to consolidate its service for the duration of the coronavirus crisis.

Speaking to RedFM News in the past half hour, Cork TD Mick Barry says SouthDoc employees are vital at the moment.

"When the nation was out on the doorsteps last night applauding the healthcare workers, SouthDoc workers were being laid off without pay.

"We needs all hands on deck in our health service, and if SouthDoc is to be consolidated then redeployment would seem a far better option than layoffs for this workers."
