The Taoiseach has suggested it may be a number of weeks before a new government is formed, saying it's not his number one focus.
Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are attempting to put a document together this week that would spell out how a coalition between the two would work.
After that the two parties will have to convince a third partner to join them in government.
Leo Varadkar says that, coupled with the Coronavirus crisis, means there won't be a government for a few weeks yet.
"There's a lot of things that have to happen, even after agreeing that document if we can agree it, we'd need to find a third party, agree a programme for government with them, then have that agreed those parties' various Ard Fheiseanna and special delegate conferences.
"This could take a bit of time, and needles to say that our number one focus especially for those of us in government is not talks about the next government."
