A West Cork TD says no one should be taking the law into their own hands regarding Covid-19 restrictions.
Holly Cairns was speaking after a number of signs telling people to leave the area were spotted over the past few days.
Gardaí mounted one of the largest ever checkpoint operations in the country over the bank holiday weekend to enforce restrictions on movement.
Communities in West Cork had feared an influx of tourists last weekend, however Gardaí on checkpoint duty reported a level high of compliance with the rules.
Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy Cairns says people should not automatically assume that others are tourists.
"Signs have gone up in recent times, signs saying things like 'if you live more than 2km from this sign you'll be shot'.
"Things like that are hostile, and I want to put the call out to people not to assume that people should or shouldn't be here, or are or are not local.
"In many cases those with D reg cars or unfamiliar accents are residents, or they've been here since before the restrictions came in.
"I'm going to call out to people to let the Gardaí do their job, and the rest of us to lead by example."
