Council crews say they expect Storm Babet to break river banks and cause heavy flooding in the city and county today.
A status orange weather warning is in place for Cork until 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
The city council says there will be localised flooding throughout the weather alert but they expect conditions to worsen during high tide at 10 to 8 this evening.
Meanwhile the county council have raised flood barriers in Fermoy and Mallow and are preparing for power outages.
Speaking to RedFM News, David Joyce, Director of Services at Cork City Council says high tide will be the most concerning part of the day:
"We're going to experience sport flooding across the city in different locations as local rivers break their banks. We're also expecting a certain amount of flooding to the west of the city due to the amount of water coming through the catchment and in through the city. In addition to that, we have concerns about the next two tides. So the tide this evening at 7:50pm, Tuesday evening, and also the tide at 8.10am tomorrow morning, Wednesday morning. We expect there to be road flooding associated with both of those two events."
