A meeting of the County Council has heard the state caused Ian Bailey to spend his final decades under a “shadow of suspicion.”

His death was raised during the vote of condolences by Councillor Marcia D’Alton who also described Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s killing as the “flagship tragedy” of her youth.

The 66-year-old former journalist died in Bantry yesterday.

Southern reporter with the Irish Independent, Ralph Riegel says Bailey appeared to enjoy the attention:

"A friend of mine bought one of the poetry books. When they opened the poetry book, he had not only signed this, but he'd actually put his mobile phone number in it as well. On the one hand, complaining that his life was a torture, that he'd been been bonfired by the constant focus on him - wrongly associating him with the crime, and yet he was also the type of individual that seemed to revel in this type of spotlight".
