Crosshaven RNLI say the eight year old girl who died while swimming at Fountainstown Beach yesterday afternoon was swept from shallow waters by a current.
The girl was swimming with friends at waist level before she lost her footing got into difficulty.
An alarm was raised at around twenty to 5 in the afternoon and a multi-operational search including Gardaí, the Coast Guard, RNLI and Mallow Search and Rescue went on for over three hours.
The child's body was removed from the water at around quarter to eight in the evening and she was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.
Speaking to RedFM News Victor Shine from Crosshaven RNLI and Cork City Fire Brigade says every effort was made to find the child.
"Three children were swimming at the time, they were approximately at waist level and the footing of one of the children was lost and was taken out by a current. Effort was made from the family members that were at scene and locals as well at the time entering the water searching the area, and it was an immediate commencement of a search and unfortunately, the recovery was carried out later that evening."
