David Norris is resigning as a Senator this afternoon.
He has been serving in the upper house of the Oireachtas for almost 37 years.
The 79-year-old is best known for advocating for civil rights in Ireland.
He used his last speech in Seanad Éireann to call for a ceasefire in Gaza:
"Man's inhumanity to man is our greatest shame. And I have to say also goes completely against the Jewish ethic, which is "L'Chaim!" or "To Life!". This present government under Netanyahu has committed them, instead of to life, to death - to death in overwhelming numbers for the unfortunate, trapped citizens of Gaza. I deplore it completely".
