A woman who overcame homelessness by accessing health services through De Paul says connecting with people in similar situations helped her out of emergency accommodation.
The Homeless Health Peer Advocacy programme has been expanded to Cork in partnership with the Mercy University Hospital.
The initiative allows people with lived experiences of homelessness to act as health advocates and assist people in emergency accommodation to access the healthcare services they need.
Speaking to RedFM News at the launch in Cork today, Peer Advocate with the programme Sinead Flynn says speaking to someone who had been through a similar experience encouraged her to get the help she needed to escape homelessness:
"For years I was trying to get help and I tried getting proffessional help and I couldn't connect with them, it wasn't until I learned of other people with lived experience that I thought, well if they did it, so can I and you start getting a bit of belief in yourself."
