The Diocese of Cork and Ross has issued a statement after a former priest has been jailed for sexual offences.

James Murphy with an address at The Alders in Mallow, Co. Cork pleaded guilty to the offences at Inner London Crown Court in February.

The former priest served in parishes in England until 1992 and then returned to Cork where he was a priest in St Patrick's Cork and Glounthaune.

The Diocese of Cork and Ross says there was no indication or report that he had abused minors in London parishes at that time until the year 2000 when he pleaded guilty to offences committed in earlier decades in London and his right to minister was withdrawn.

He was charged with seven offences of indecent assault relating to four boys between aged between 5 and 11 between 1975 and 1988.

The Diocese says it has not had any contact with James Murphy since he was sentenced to 31 months in prison.

Anyone who wants to make a report is urged to contact the Diocese of Cork and Ross, Gardaí or Tusla.
