An attack by a pitbull terrier on a couple in a suburb of Cork city has led to fresh calls for these restricted breeds to be banned
The man and woman had to be rushed to Cork University Hospital yesterday evening from their home in Ballyphehane to be treated for their injuries
Gardaí contacted the CSPCA looking for assistance to get the dog under control but after failed sedation attempts the pitbull was destroyed
Vincent Cashman from the CSPCA described the scene at the house
"The dog was a family pet a Pitbull, but we think the dog just turned on them. It could have been a strange smell, sight, sound or anything that just triggered the dog to to attack. It attacked the woman first and then as she was crying for help the gentleman intervened and he got attacked"
