Dublin City Council has passed a motion calling for a four-day working week to be introduced for council staff.

The proposal also called on the local authority to start piloting the reduced schedule among its 6,000 employees.

The motion was put forward by Labour councillor Kevin Donoghue.

He's delighted with the support it received at the council meeting.

"Last night I asked councillors to support a motion for the piloting and introducing of a four day week for Dublin City Council.

"There are conversations that need to take places between unions and the executive, but there was unanimous support for it on the Council, and there was a positive response from Dublin City Council executives on the notion of engaging on the introduction of a four day week.

"I think it's a very big step for the Council and the executives."
