An extra €3m is to be spent on road safety and education campaigns this year.

63 people have been killed on the country's roads so far this year, 7 of which happened on Cork roads.

Meanwhile 2 children were hit by cars in separate incidents in Cork yesterday.

A young girl was treated for non life threatening injuries after she was hit by a car in Turners Cross yesterday at around 4pm.

Yesterday evening a young boy was hit by a car on Dywer's Road in Midleton around 7 o'clock. He was treated for non life threatening injuries.

Dominic Brophy, Director, Professional Driving Instructors Association, says the driving test curriculum needs to be updated to improve road safety:

"Compared to international standards and European standards were at a very low level we would call for that to be reviewed and for more obligatory lessons to be put in place because we see young people dying on our roads."
