Education in school is the key to eliminating gender based violence.
That's the opinion of the National Women's Council as it meets with representatives today to discuss a redevelopment of the SPHE curriculum.
The organisation believes mandatory relationship and sex education will help promote healthy boundaries, consent and safer sexual practices.
Expert in Family Law, Louise Crowley, says a key focus will be pornography and how it warps a young person's mind:
"In order to support each other and support themselves, to be able to provide a safe space with the relevant information by teachers who are trained and supported to do so, it is an absolutely fundamental requirement if we are to address this, absolutely terrorising elements of our society, which is affecting young people so badly and feeding into their relationships right through into adulthood".
