Efforts under way to get 33 Irish citizens including 8 children home from Afghanistan

The government is working with EU member states and the UK to secure spaces on military flights for those that want to come home.

However, the Foreign Affairs Minister says Kabul airport is still quite chaotic and it's difficult even for military flights to fly in and out of.

Ireland has agreed to accept 195 refugees but facing calls from the Irish Refugee network to take at least 1,000.

Minister Simon Coveney was asked whether that would be a possibility:

"I personally hope so. You know, we are effectively the first country in the EU, I think, to actually announce a figure as a starting position. From my perspective, I'd like us to do more, I have to say, but we have to plan for that properly."
