Emergency services respond to 2 separate incidents in Ballyvolane

A man has been arrested after a suspected petrol bombing at a premises in Ballyvolane last night.

The incident happened at around 10.50pm on Ballincollie Road.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident and arrested a man in his 30's.

No injuries have been reported and investigations are ongoing.

Second Officer with Cork City Fire Brigade Victor Shine has the details for RedFM News:

"Crews were met by staff of the premises, who said that petrol had been poured onto the decking and set on fire, they brought the fire under control using extinguishers and there was some windows open and damage."

Meanwhile, Gardaí responded to a separate incident after a hand grenade was thrown at a house in the Ballyvolane area this morning.

It happened shortly after midnight and a number of surrounding homes were evacuated.

The army bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion and no injuries were reported.

Gardaí said:

Gardaí responded to reports of the discharge of a firearm at a location Ballyvolane, Cork city shortly after midnight on Monday 2nd September 2024.

On arrival a suspect device was subsequently discovered.  The area was evacuated and a cordon put in place.

The services of the Irish Defence Forces Ordnance Disposal team were requested and they conducted a controlled explosion.

The occupants of the residences which were evacuated have since been allowed to return to their properties.

There were no reports of injuries or damage. The scene is currently being held for examination. 

Investigations are ongoing.
