An environmentalist says reports of tech companies making a demand that the government issue a policy statement on data centres is 'offensive'.
The Business Post reports that Google, Amazon and Microsoft are calling for ministers to issue support for the facilities and direct government departments to support them.
There are concerns around the amount of energy the centres use, with fears about future blackouts in Ireland.
Jack O'Sullivan is an environmentalist, he says these companies should follow guidelines from the energy regulator:
"Even the very use of the word demand, I have to say I found it very, very offensive when I read that Google, Amazon and Microsoft are demanding something. We have rejected all proposals made by the Energy Regulator to have a consultation on managing data centres. Now that is horrific."
