Electric vehicle charging points are set to be installed in sportsgrounds and shopping centres across the country, as part of a new EV infrastructure plan.
Transport Minister Eamon Ryan says the strategy includes plans to install high-powered chargers every 60 kilometres on the motorway network.
€100m is set to be spent on the new infrastructure over the next three years.
Minister Ryan says these plans had to be made, as work with councils on the rollout of charging points hasn't worked to date.
"Sports clubs right across the country would be able to put in some charging points. Everyone can see the sense of that - going there to watch the match and bring the kids or whatever, and you can charge there and that would be a big help to the community.
"The work with our local government hasn't worked yet - we've had a grant scheme to try and get local authorities to put in chargers but it hasn't worked so we're changing it, and we're giving them greater support."
