The team from St. Colman’s College consists of Fionn O'Connell, Colm Clancy, Pearce Wyley, Darragh Casey, Marc Callanan and Quentin Joyce.
The STEM Challenge raises awareness among schoolchildren across the world of STEM through Formula 1 with the aim of encouraging students to think creatively, improve their skills, and gain confidence.
Teams of students aged 9 to 19 years of age deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air powered cars made from the F1 model block.
The St. Colman’s College team is one of four Irish teams that will compete in the F1 in Schools world finals in the UK next April.
Fionn O’Connell, Team Manager, FAF Racing, said:
“Going to the World Finals means everything to us after our first year in the competition. Everyone has learned engineering and business-related skills, which will prove to be very useful later in life and further education. My advice for the students entering this year would be work hard and the rewards will definitely be worth it.”
The teams must raise sponsorship and manage budgets to fund research, travel and accommodation
The challenge inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership/teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.
Registration for F1 in Schools Ireland 2021/22 will close on Friday 22nd October.
