Firefighters in the city will be the first in the country to be equipped with an anti-overdose drug.
Naloxone is used to reverse the effects of drugs such as heroin, methadone and extremely potent synthetic opioids.
It can temporarily reverse the effects of opioids for between twenty and ninety minutes, and can restore normal breathing in about two minutes.
Speaking to RedFM News at today's launch, Second Officer at Cork City Fire Brigade Victor Shine, says crews were also the first to be trained in cardiac first response
"The number of overdoses that we've come across has increased in the last number of years, and it's something that we are concerned about. Our mission is obviously to save lives, we figured that this is a really good way to go forward from our CFR initiative that we've started over ten years ago to maybe saving even more lives, though, with the Naloxone aboard"
