Firefighters at Anglesea Street Fire Station will stage two protests a day to raise awareness of their calls for a full-time fire service in Ballincollig.

Crews will protest outside the station before the 9am and 6pm shifts each day, while the crew that has just been relieved will also stage a short demonstration.

Ballincollig Fire Station has been closed since November 2021, with cover being provided by firefighters at Anglesea Street.

The City Council has been trying to recruit part time retained staff for the station, however the recruitment campaign has not been successful.

In a statement issued to RedFM News the Council has described the action as "disappointing" and says it remains available to meet with union representatives.

The Council has also sought the assistance of the Workplace Relations Commission on the matter

Speaking to RedFM News firefighter and SIPTU rep, Billy Crowley outlines why they have begun to protest.

"Guys are worried for their own safety, and the safety of the public.

"Essentially what you have is the brigade that was there for the 'old' city is now spread very thinly across the 'new' city, which is a much bigger area with double the population. You can only stretch something so far before it breaks.

"It needs a service out there [in Ballincollig]. They've been trying to recruit retained firefighters out there since October of 2020, that's two and a half years.

"We need the resource so the only option is to run it on a full time basis."
