Focus Ireland is calling on the Government to take a different approach to homelessness.
The call comes as new figures show 545 Cork adults were accessing emergency accommodation in November along with 204 children in Cork and Kerry.
Last year Focus Ireland supported 680 households in Cork who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
Conor Culkin of Focus Ireland told RedFM News that long term homeless need to be prioritised for social housing.
"In order to reduce the number of people who are homeless, we need to have a fairer share of social housing allocated to those who have been homeless for longer periods of time. And this would in turn reduce the harm caused by homelessness, and ensure there's enough temporary accommodation for those who need the form of support the most."
