A former Lord Mayor of the City says lessons have to be learned from the failure to set up a supervised injection centre in Dublin.
Cllr Mick Finn is youth worker and member of the Drug and Alcohol task force and has been advocating for injection centres for over ten years.
The idea of injection centres in the city has been controversial with the location of the centre proving to be one of several sticking points.
This week the current Lord Mayor Cllr Colm Kelleher and Chief Executive of the City Council Ann Doherty gave the idea their backing.
Speaking to RedFM News, Cllr Mick Finn says now is the right time to tackle the issue.
"The prevalence of heroin users in the city has become very obvious in recent months, and it was very obvious in Covid times as well.
"I think we need to look at constructive ways of dealing with people of all ages who are addicted to heroin, and we need to look at it sympathetically and empathetically instead of from a criminal justice perspective.
