A summer of discontent could be on the cards at Cork's city library as FORSA has accused the City Council of failing to protect library staff from "intimidation and harassment".
The union has accused the Council of a dereliction of duty in providing a safe working environment for library staff who have been forced to deal with protestors objecting to the availability of what they call "pornographic" books related to LGBTI+ matters.
Protestors have been recording their action and staff reaction and streaming that on social media.
In March a copy of Juno Dawson’s This Book is Gay was ripped in half by a protester in the Cork library and this was subsequently streamed.
FORSA's Richy Carrothers told RedFM News that they have tried to engage with the Council to no avail and they have now put them on notice.
"This is harassment at the most basic level. The Council simply aren't doing enough.
"If it continues we will take matters into our own hands and respond industrially.
"We have instructed our people to extract themselves when these known individuals present at the library.
"Really we need the management and there Gardai to work in tandem here to put a stop to it."
