Close to €30,000 has been raised for the family of a little girl who died while swimming with friends in Fountainstown on Tuesday evening.

Emili Roman, who would have been celebrating her 8th birthday today, was swimming with friends when she was swept away by a current just after half past 4 in the afternoon.

A multi agency search was launched and her body was recovered from the water three hours later.

Emili was a second class student at Templebreedy National School in Crosshaven along with her twin brother Jeremy.

Emili's funeral will take place in the Church of Our Lady and St John in Carrigaline on Saturday and the family say that everyone is welcome however they would appreciate privacy at this time.

Speaking to RedFM News Enterprise Minister Simon Coveney says the entire community are heartbroken for Emily's family and loved ones

"It's been a desperate summer in the context of, of tragedy involving children, both on our roads and unfortunately with water accidents as well. Two of them very close to where I live. And you know, the community is just broken again."

Anyone who would like to donate to Emily's fundraiser should see GoFundMe
