Austin Gleeson says the door has been left open for him to return to the Waterford hurling panel at any time.
The 2016 hurler of the year has decided to opt out of Davy Fitzgerald’s squad for 2024.
Gleeson says he hopes a break from the inter-county scene will revive his appetite for the game, and insists his relationship with Fitzgerald is a good one.
The Mount Sion clubman told The Irish Examiner that a return to the panel in the future is still a possibility.
"I need a break for a while. It’s not as if I’m never going to go back or anything like that. As Davy said to me, the door is definitely open if in the next few weeks or next month or two I have a change of heart."
