The Sarsfields and Glanmire clubman is the only man in history to win All Ireland hurling and football medals in the same year, as part of the double winning Cork teams in 1990.
McCarthy scored three points from midfield in the 1990 hurling final as the Rebels saw off Galway, and two weeks later started in the half forward line for the footballers as they defeated Meath.`
McCarthy made his senior Cork hurling debut in the 1986 final against Galway for his first All ireland Medal, with his first Al ireland football medal coming in the 1989 as Cork defeated Mayo - he was also named an all star that year.
McCarthy won two Cork Senior Football Championship titles with Imokilly, along with an intermediate title with Glanmire.
His former clubs led the tributes, with Sarsfields saying that they were beyond devastated at the sudden passing of their much loved Vice Chairman Teddy McCarthy, who they called "our most famous of players" , while Glanmire said "the saddest news has rocked our club and our community"
Teddy McCarthy is survived by his wife Oonagh, daughter Sinead and sons Cian and Niall.
