The Garda Commissioner has ruled out the approval of overtime to get more Gardaí on the streets in Cork.
Drew Harris was speaking at a meeting of the Cork City Joint Policing Committee which heard there's 23 less Gardaí in the city division than there was three years ago.
Mr Harris said Cork will get a share of the new recruits due to graduate at the end of the month but warned that recruitment and retention of Gardaí is an issue in the force.
Speaking on the Neil Prendeville show Senator Jerry Buttimer says the meeting could have been more informative:
"I thought we could have had a bigger engagement. He could have heard more from members and the members of the business community and the residents who live in the city. So we had to submit questions in advance of the meeting. Then the Garda Commissioner gave it a replay and look, he gave a great reply. It was very, very nuanced, very political in terms of policing politics, but it didn't to me serve the needs of people that it could have."
