A Cork City councillor says Gardaí have failed to act on escalating violence in Blackpool in recent months.

It's after last night's shooting in the suburb, which left a man in his twenties seriously hurt in hospital.

Gardaí say the victim brought himself to hospital, and his injuries aren't thought to be life-threatening.

Cork City Councillor Ken O'Flynn says local are living in fear and it's getting worse:

"I have to say Gardaí have been very poor in their response to the locals in the area regarding certain families that have moved into Blackpool. The escalation in the last number of months in violence and threats in Blackpool is unacceptable. I have people ringing me in my constituency telling me straight out that they're afraid to open their doors at night they're afraid to go out onto the streets, and that's something that was never, ever, in Blackpool before."
