Skibbereen rowers Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy turned in an incredible performance in the lightweight double sculls final, finishing ahead of Germany and Italy in a time of 6 minutes and 6 seconds.
It's Ireland's first ever gold medal in rowing, and Ireland's first gold since Katie Taylor in 2012.
President Michael D Higgins has paid tribute to Ireland's latest gold medal heroes.
He's described the victory overnight as a "tremendous achievement, which gives great inspiration to young people."
Sean O'Brien is Captain of Skibbereen Rowing Club says everyone is delighted with the win.
"It's not hitting in properly yet, we're high on life at the moment!
"Paris in three years beckons again, there are four people trying to get into that boat.
"There are two in it, and Jake [McCarthy] and Gary [O'Donovan] they'll be looking at that boat for Paris.
"So it's going to be a hot boat for Paris whoever's in it, and good luck to them"
