The decriminalisation of cannabis will be up for discussion by government this week.
People Before Profit are introducing a bill to amend the Misuse of Drugs act, to allow anyone over 18 possess up to 7 grams of cannabis, without being subject to criminal sanction.
The proposition follows a recommendation from the Citizens Assembly on Drug Use in favour of the move.
People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny says it's time for a new approach:
"We've had six decades of the Act itself. Over those six decades, it has criminalised tens of thousands of people - sent them through the criminal justice system. The Citizens Assembly looked at this and have come to a conclusion that the status quo simply doesn't work and we need a different model".
