The comment comes as Ireland overtook the UK in the vaccine rollout, with 72.4 per cent of adults now fully vaccinated here.

Multiple centres across the country reported strong attendance at the walk-ins clinics, with many young people queuing up to receive their first vaccine.

Anyone aged over 16 is eligible to show up and get their first dose.

There are two WALK-IN clinics offering vaccines in Cork today:

Bantry Primary Care centre is open for walk-ins from 11am to 3pm, while City Hall is open from 1 o'clock to 4.

Attendees are reminded to bring photo ID; their PPS number and their Eircode.

CEO of the HSE, Paul Reid, says they didn't know what to expect from the first day of walk-in centre:

"We've been blown away by the response yesterday, and the numbers of people showing up at the Walk-In Centres. We weren't fully sure. We knew it was going to be a good opportunity for people, who hadn't had the opportunity to have their vaccination, come in but particularly the younger people, who have come forward, they've really just blown us away. The numbers, the response that we're seen, both in the urban centres and in rural centres across the country."
