It's hoped the announcement of new acute beds at Cork University Hospital will help bring about the end of overcrowding at the hospital
342 beds are to come on stream at the hospital between now and 2031
The hospital is regularly the second most overcrowded hospital in the country and INMO figures show 1100 patients were treated on trolleys at CUH last month
Speaking to RedFM News, Professor of Emergency Medicine at CUH Conor Deasy says at the moment patients are spending too long in the ED due to a lack of beds
"This investment in bed capacity means that the patient will move into an appropriate clinical surround for them to receive their ongoing care if they need to be admitted. Now, it is incumbent upon us to keep the system moving, if it is that the patient can be sent home, that there is a home care package to facilitate that patient getting home if that's what's needed"
