Close contacts to confirmed Covid-19 cases are being tested in 631 schools since reopening, according to the HSE.
The health service is reporting a a surge in demand for testing since classes resumed in recent days.
The Irish Times reports pupils in more than 100 primary schools have been tested each day since Tuesday, and 75 secondary schools had students tested on Thursday.
HSE test and trace lead, Niamh O'Beirne, told the paper the high demand reflects the level of covid in the community, rather than evidence of spread in schools.
