Around 7% of children being tested for Covid 19 in the past week are positive for the virus, according to the HSE.

Under 18s made up almost half of all testing last week following the return of schools.

The HSE says as the number of tests are going up, the positivity rate is coming down.

It comes as NPHET considers scaling back testing for young children and vaccinated people if their symptoms are mild.

The more selective testing would mean it would only happen if a health professional thinks it’s necessary.

However Niamh O’Beirne from the HSE says this won’t be happening any time soon.

"We have a strategy that can have various options of how would you scale it down, how would you maintain it, how would you scale it back up.

"There is a degree of uncertainty as to what would happen.

"There are currently no plans to reduce any of the capacity that we have.

"As you can see, we're using it, we're very busy and it needs to remain in place."
