The number of people seeking international protection in Ireland is up almost 200%, compared to pre-covid figures.

A new report by the ESRI shows Ireland received just under 6,500 asylum applications in the first half of this year, compared with 2,200 during the same period in 2019.

The research found the main drivers were a post-covid catch-up in migration and increased conflict, in the likes of Ukraine and Afghanistan.

Author of the report, Keire Murphy, says it was commissioned by the Department of Integration and will go towards informing its policy.

"Our recommendation from this is flexible reception systems are really really important for dealing with this type of migration.

"The research is relatively conclusive that this is the type of migration that varies significantly across time, and in a way that is completely out of the control of national governments.

"Flexible reception systems that can aim to accommodate the top numbers is a really important policy."
