It comes as the hospital is in it's 15th day of not accepting new admissions.

The South/South West Hospital Group, of which Bantry General Hospital is part, says it was necessary to close to new admissions because of staff shortages at the hospital's Acute Medical Assessment Unit.

The Hospital Group told RedFM News that the issues in Bantry are short-term and will be resolved in the coming weeks.

A protest against the restrictions is getting underway in the square in Bantry today.

The Industrial Relations Officer for the INMO, Liam Conway told RedFM News that without additional staff, the hospital will have to remain closed for admissions:

"The iron wall calling on the south-southwest task groups the HSE, to ensure that this difficulty in terms of recruitment is addressed immediately, and also locum covers is arranged in the interim, it's absolutely crucial that this service is maintained without a medical assessment unit that means the hospital is closed for admissions."
