The inquest into the death of Marie Downey and her son Darragh continues in the city this morning.

The 36 year old and her four day old son died at Cork University Hospital in March 2019.

Kieran Downey told yesterday's sitting of Cork City Coroner's Court that he felt the death of his wife and son could have been prevented 'at many points along the way'.

He said he believed more should have been done to take her epilepsy into account and also said he was disappointed that the clincial director of CUMH Prof John Higgins was not present at the inquest.

Coroner Philip Comyn heard that Marie had lost around one fifth of her blood due to a postpartum haemorrhage, however she seemed to recover well after getting blood and fluids.

The 36 year old mother of three was discovered dead on the floor of her hospital room on the morning she was due to be discharged.

Her four day old son Darragh was found under her and died one day later.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster and consultant obstetrician Professor Keelin O'Donoghue are due to give evidence over the next two days
