Negotiations to try to save the 242 year old retailer have been ongoing since April
The group closed 11 Irish stores including two in Cork in April with the loss of around 1,000 jobs.
Todays announcement comes after JD Sports withdrew their bid for 124 Debenhams stores and just one day after Topshop owner Arcadia collapsed with the potential loss of 13,000 jobs.
Former staff at Debenhams Irish stores have been blockading their former work places since the closures in a row over redundancy payments
Speaking to RedFM News, Valerie Conlon from Debenhams on Patrick Street says it's possible that employees in the UK will also block liquidators for gaining access to stock:
"I would like to think they're prepared because it's been going on a long time now. This has been going on since last April, really. So I would think that they're prepared, they're very strong over there, they've been sending us letters of support. Obviously we stand in solidarity with them. It's 12,000 staff, it's very sad today for them, and it's something that we were hoping wouldn't come to this, but unfortunately it has, and I hope that they will be strong enough and do the same as what we're doing here."
