An independent TD says using the Gardaí for foreign security purposes introduces an additional layer of complexity when it comes to keeping ministers safe abroad.

It comes after the decision for the Gardaí's emergency response unit to accompany Foreign Affairs Minister, Simon Coveney, to Ukraine this week.

Traditionally the role would be taken up by the Defence Forces and the Army Ranger Wing.

The decision has lead to criticism that the group best suited to the task was overlooked.

Independent TD Cathal Berry, a former commander with the ARW, says it's an issue that shouldn't happen again:

"Why anyone would would want to introduce an additional government department at Department of Justice, an additional agency to add an additional layer of complexity is beyond me really. So that's pretty much a blunder at governmental level and hopefully this issue will be will be ironed out before the next trip in a few weeks time".
