EU Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic says there has been a positive change of tone from the British side over the Northern Ireland protocol.
He was speaking after meeting the UK's Brexit Minister David Frost in London.
Commission Vice President Sefcovic believes some of the differences could be resolved in a week:
"I'm insisting so much that, as far as we can judge, the agreed solution all in the fields of medicine, is actually quite low hanging fruit. And I believe that if our experts put their mind to it, they can actually resolve it within a week. I really believe so because I mean, we are we are so close."
Meanwhile, Britain's Brexit Minister David Frost says there remains significant gaps to be bridged between the EU and UK positions.
He says while discussions have been constructive, intensified talks will take place in Brussels next week.
The two lead negotiators will meet at the end of the week to consider progress.
