EU member states are being urged to cut their gas usage amid a looming energy crisis.
It comes as the European Commission is expected to upgrade an emergency energy 'alert' this week.
The Nordstream 1 gas pipline between Russia and Germany was turned off last week for 'maintenance works' with fears it may no be switched on again.
Muireann Lynch, Energy Economist with the ESRI, says although Ireland doesn't rely on Nordstream, other European countries may have to tap into our supply:
"Now it's certainly true that we get about 30% of our gas produced here in Ireland and the other 70% from Great Britain, so it's highly unlikely that a molecule of gas burnt in an Irish home or an Irish powerplants came from Russia itself. However, we are connected via Europe to the Russian system, and we've always had agreements in place that in the event of an energy emergency, we would actually share resources."
