EU officials have recommended Ukraine become a candidate for European Union membership.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the process is "merit's based" and progress now depends on Ukraine carrying out reforms.
Moldova has also been made a candidate for membership.
The Taoiseach says the recommendation's historic and has pledged Ireland's full support.
President von der Leyen announced the news earlier:
"We have one clear message. And that is 'Yes, Ukraine deserves European perspective. Yes, Ukraine should be welcomed as a candidate country. This is on the understanding that good work has been done, but important work also remains to be done'".
