The European Commission's set to raise its emergency supply status to its second highest level today, amid fears of a winter gas shortage.
It'll also urge member states to reduce their usage and prepare in the event Russia cuts supplies.
Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says Ireland will be expected to comply.
"They are now going to have the second highest level of alert for European countries.
"We need to prepare for what would be shortages and reductions during the coming winter.
"Where Ireland is concerned, we really need to wake up to what is happening. We seem to have our head in the sand, as if there was no war in Ukraine.
"Our policy hasn't changed one iota."
