A former Minister of State's defended the right of the President's wife to call for talks to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Sabina Higgins wrote a letter to the Irish Times suggesting the leaders of Ukraine and Russia should be persuaded to agree a ceasefire and hold talks.
There has been some criticism of the intervention.
