The Government is to arrange a special meeting of countries in the coming days to address climate change and international security.
The commitment was made by the Taoiseach in New York last night where he addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations.
He also praised Irish soldiers for their dedicated service to UN peace-keeping missions down through the decades.
Michael Martin pleaded with all international countries to put their differences aside and commit to their promises in the UN Charter on human rights:
"Today, I call on all members of the Council to set aside political differences and to work to uphold that promise. Syria presents an urgent example of where this is needed."
